Guanyin Platform, also known as Big Platform and Big Top, is one of the peaks in the middle section of Zhongnanshan and has an altitude of 1,688 meters. Guanyin Patform got its name from the legend of Guanyin Goddess of Mercy subduing a fire dragon: during the Renshou period of the Sui Dynasty, there was a fire dragon in South Wutai, which transformed into a Taoist and sold medicine in Chang'an City, cheating people and telling them that the person would attain the Dao and become an immortal if the person took the medicine. In fact, the Taoist was using a black art. After the person took the medicine, the Taoist brought him/her back to the cave to devour. Therefore, Guanyin Goddess of Mercy appeared as a Buddhist monk and built a grass hut on the peak, then used the Buddha dharma to subdue the fire dragon, so that the people were protected from harm. In order to express appreciation to the mercy of Guanyin, the believers built Yuanguang Temple on the Guanyin Platform to enshrine Guanyin Goddess of Mercy. Guanyin Platform is soaring aloft on the three sides, precipitous as formed through chop by a knife or an axe. After you climb and reach the top of the peak, and view Zhongnanshan southwards, you will see that the mountains are like green screens around and around, peaks are like green blades reaching for the blue sky, and green mountains are upon green maintains. You can satisfy your view to the clouds and sky in the distance. Bai Juyi, a poet in the Tang Dynasty, once visited Guanyin Platform and wrote the poem Watching the City on Guanyin Platform: hundreds of houses presenting as the layout of a Weiqi game, twelve streets as vegetable beds. I recognize the slight lights far away and that it is the moment of officials entering court. A constellation is lighting in the west of the fifth gate of the palace.
